Watercolor Artist Dick Grodt Visits Jackson Elementary
Nationally recognized artist Dick Grodt works with students at Jackson Elementary in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, 22, 2009. Grodt is a native of Iowa and returned to teach a watercolor class and share wisdom with the kids about determination, rising above difficulties and respect for differences.
2nd Grade - Castles and Color
The many blocks that make up the castle were used to explore color mixing. Introduced in this lesson was wet on wet painting techniques. After filling a block with clean water the student then took a brush loaded with color and touched the wetted paper...the rapidly spreading color was fun to watch and then fun to manipulate by adding other colors. Not all blocks had to use wet on wet though.

Here's an interesting video while we're thinking about water. It's an advertisement for a Symphony Orchestra in Germany, and has won several awards. The words below the video are part of the video's description on its Vimeo page. The word "lions" refers to the Cannes Lions 2008 Film Bronze award which the video won.
We also know how to work it the other way round. What looks like 3D-blood was filmed in real life. Out of consideration for the part-time vegetarians among us, we quickly abstained from the idea of making use of the resource „porc blood“. Instead, fish tanks of all sizes and red liquids in all consistencies were obtained and the toilet was turned into our experimental lab. Eager to compete with any science fair, we pipetted, poured, shook , whirled and messed around until the right colour followed the dance the director wanted it to. John Neumeier it was to be, no chainsaw massacre... With lyric fragility the real life sequences were choreograqhed to the virtous sounds of Fail Soy...
In our view, blood does not just flow: it performs pirouettes, arabèsques - par terre or dans l’air, chassé, frappé, glissé...And that is that. We will stop copying from the grand encyclopedia of ballet.
We take a bow and say thank you for the lion.

One Reviewer wrote: "The shoot took place in the less than opulent surroundings of the vestibule in the WC at the Sehsucht studio. A small aquarium was set up and the team spent a good deal of R&D team testing oils, inks and playing with the water consistency by introducing washing-up liquid. "Now, I know the approach is not a new one and many film students / motion houses have created some work using similar techniques. But the results Sehsucht have come up with are in an altogether different class to anything I’ve seen created in this way before. What struck me first was the bind between the music by Fazil Say and the pace and movement Sehsucht achieve. There is a definite evolution to the piece that is based upon the three acts of ‘exposition, confrontation and epilogue’ that Sehsucht drew from Fazil’s music. I find the in-camera results, particularly the lighting in the liquid to be absolutely exquisite. The liquid formation and dissolution of the typography is again, straight out of the top drawer. As you’ll see, the team do introduce CG elements into the piece such as the human form appearing near the end, but they fit so seemlessly into the spot that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart from the in-camera work."
